ENHANCE YOUR FACIAL CONTOURS WITH A FACIAL FAT TRANSFER PROCEDURE
It is a little known fact that many visible signs of facial aging are a direct result of the degeneration of the underlying facial tissues that occurs during the natural aging process. The health of these tissues is crucial for the facial skin to retain its youthfully full, luminous appearance, which is why facial tissue deterioration inevitably leads to the increasing visibility of creases, wrinkles, and lines. Tissue degradation is also linked to the depletion of facial volume, which can contribute to a tired, sunken, or gaunt facial appearance.
autologous facial fat transfer (a.k.a. microlipoinjection, fat injection, fat grafting) provides patients with a minimally invasive countermeasure to many signs of facial aging, and is an effective way to restore depleted facial volume; fill in unsightly creases, wrinkles and folds; and naturally rejuvenate one’s facial appearance without requiring anesthesia, surgical incisions, or an extended recovery period. Fat transfer involves the use of the patient’s own body fat to plump up emaciated, hollow, or sunken areas of the face or to replenish volume where it is needed.
Although fat transfer is a less invasive facial rejuvenation option, it requires a significant level of precision and clinical expertise, and should only be performed by an experienced facial plastic surgeon such as Dr. D. David Saadat, founder and lead plastic surgeon at the Beverly Hills Aesthetic Surgical Institute. Dr. Saadat is a widely respected, Triple Board Certified Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon who has helped many patients enhance their facial contours with expertly performed facial fat transfer procedures.
FACIAL FAT TRANSFER BENEFITS
Facial fat transfer procedures can be performed to correct a number of cosmetic concerns, including:
- Facial wrinkles and creases
- nasolabial folds extending down from the nose to the mouth (“laugh lines”)
- Fine lines around the orbital area (“crow’s feet”
- Marionette lines running straight down from the corners of the mouth
- Acne or injury-related scars
- Hollow or sunken areas of the face (i.e. lips, cheeks, and temples)
- Skin depressions or indentations
- Forehead furrows, wrinkles, and creases
- Hollow cheeks, chin, and under-eye area
- Thin lips
After your fat injection service, you can expect the skin around the transfer sites to appear softer and fuller, giving you a refreshed, revitalized facial appearance with visible improvements in skin condition and texture.
FAT INJECTIONS VS. DERMAL FILLERS
The primary difference between the injections performed during autologous fat transfer and other injectable dermal fillers is that fat injections are comprised of the patient’s own fat, and do not require the introduction of a foreign material into the body, which makes fat transfer an ideal option for patients with allergies or sensitivities to products containing collagen or Hylaform®.
Duration of results is another differentiating factor between facial fat injections and dermal fillers. In general, hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers (i.e. Juvederm, Restylane) break down and dissolve over the course of several months, requiring periodic maintenance injections to preserve the rejuvenating results. By contrast, fat injection results can last from several months to more than two years, and in some cases, can provide permanent results, rendering further treatments unnecessary.
FAT TRANSFER PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY
The fat transfer procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia and is typically associated with minimal discomfort and little (if any) downtime. Fat injections often serve as an excellent supplementary procedure that can be performed in conjunction with a facelift and/or other facial rejuvenation services to maximize and extend your results.
Facial fat grafting involves three primary steps:
- Phase 1: a gentle, non-invasive liposuction technique known as manual syringe liposuction (a.k.a. mini liposuction, syringe assisted liposuction) is used to harvest small amounts of excess fat from a donor site on your body (i.e. thighs, abdomen, hips, neck, or chin)
- Phase 2: the harvested fat cells are isolated and sterilized
- Phase 3: the sterilized fat cells are carefully injected into the targeted facial areas (i.e. temples, cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds, under eye area, mid-face region, cheeks, forehead, and/or skin depressions)
After the completion of your fat transfer procedure, you may notice some slight swelling and/or bruising around the injection sites, which should abate within in a few days. Any discomfort can be easily managed with pain medication, and many of our patients are able to return to their normal daily activities within 12-24 hours of their fat transfer procedure. The volumizing effects of your fat transfer will be immediately apparent, and will continue to improve after any residual swelling has subsided.
