Are Dermal Fillers painful?

Most patients do not find the Dermal Filler procedure to be painful. Before your treatment, we will apply a topical numbing cream to make your experience more bearable, but some patients may find the injection process to be a little uncomfortable. This discomfort should be very minimal and short-lasting.

How many appointments will I need?

You should only need one treatment session to achieve the effects of a Dermal Filler, but if you are unsatisfied or if for any reason your filler does not take, we can always have you come back in for another treatment. Most fillers will start to be naturally reabsorbed by your body within six to 12 months, so if you would like to maintain your appearance, you may want to consider “touch-up” appointments around this time.

How long until I see results?

You should see some immediate results following your filler injection, but you may also be slightly swollen, bruised, or have an “overfilled” appearance. It could take about four weeks for the filler to be fully integrated into your tissue, but once it’s settled, you will be able to enjoy your look for at least six to 12 months.

Can I combine Dermal Fillers with other procedures?

Of course! The loss of volume in one’s face is a natural occurrence as your body gets older. While many people are comfortable with their aged appearance, others are not, and it’s now up to you if you want to change the course of time, and look more youthful than you do today. The Beverly Hills Aesthetic Surgical Institute offers several different Dermal Filler options to our Beverly Hills patients that can give them a more youthful look and improve their confidence.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are substances that are used to replace lost volume in certain areas of the face. When used appropriately they can result in substantial and fairly long-lasting improvement. They are not replacements or alternatives to using neurotoxins as they treat different areas and problems.

Hyaluronic Acids (Juvederm, Restylane, and others). These products are composed of a gel-like substance that is found in our bodies in between the cells. This substance is lost as we age, so one can consider this as replacement therapy in a way. These fillers are soft to the touch and are used in the lips and other areas where a softer product is needed. They do not typically last as long as some of the other fillers.
Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres (Radiesse). This product is another naturally occurring compound in our body and has a paste-like consistency. It is used in areas where a thicker, firmer filler is needed. It has a variety of uses ranging from facial augmentation as well as for hand rejuvenation when there is too much tendon showing in the hands after volume loss. Most studies have found it to last somewhat longer than hyaluronic acid products.
Poly-L-Lactic Acid (Sculptra) This product is a synthetic polymer that has long been used in dissolvable suture material. It works differently than the other fillers: it stimulates your body to generate new collagen. It is intended for deeper injection sites such as the cheek or temple areas and should not be used in the eyelid or lips. It requires multiple injection sessions to reach the goal of correction, whereas most of the other fillers can be used to obtain correction in 1 or 2 sessions.

What’s the first step?

What to Expect On The Day of Dermal Fillers

No matter which filler you get, your experience should be about the same. We will have you make yourself comfortable in our reclining chair, and apply a topical anesthetic or cold compresses to make your experience more tolerable. Next, we will make some strategic markings where we plan to make the injections. Using a very fine needle, we will inject the filler at those selected spots at very specific measurements. Together, we will evaluate the results and add more only if needed. The filler will also be gently massaged to spread it around to achieve a more natural look. Each injection will be very quick and should be overall painless. Once you are finished and satisfied with your look, we will give you an ice pack to lightly apply to the treated area to prevent excessive swelling or bruising. Before we release you, we will have you stick around for about 15 minutes to ensure you don’t have any allergic reactions.

Aftermath

After your treatment, you will be able to return home or get back to your normal routine immediately. You may have an “overfilled” appearance, as well as some swelling, bruising, numbness, or redness initially after your treatment, but these should resolve themselves over the next few hours up until a few days. We recommend avoiding any intense physical activity for the first 24 – 48 hours to minimalize swelling and bruising.

Juvederm
